I predicted that Cam Newton would avoid the dreaded Sophomore Slump this season. So far, the Panthers are 1-5 and Newton sounds like he is ready to give up. He's thrown for 1,387 yards, and he only has five TD passes against six interceptions, while his QB rating of 79.3 puts him at 23rd in the league. So much for not having a slump.
For the first few weeks, his numbers were almost identical and actually a little bit better than his rookie year. Now he's circling the drain and gets deeper into a funk after every loss. Things are about to get really ugly in Carolina.
Aside from Newton's struggles, the rest of the league is providing plenty of excitement. Right now there are 11 teams with winning records, and there are seven more who are at .500. Outside of the NFC South, where the Falcons have a four game lead already thanks to being 6-0, every division is competitive.
The NFC West remains the surprisingly strongest and both the NFC and AFC North are playing great ball. Overall, it was a great week around the league with most games decided by seven points or less. The only exceptions were the Packers beating the Rams by ten and the Texans beating the Ravens by 30. That's some good competitive balance.
