HBO's Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Miami Dolphins showed us something last night; even linemen get hot wives. Case in point, left tackle Jake Long's wife Jackie, who was sitting with rookie QB Ryan Tannehill's stunning wife, Lauren at the Phins' first preseason game. Well played by the Tannehills to get close to the anchor of the O-line and his wife. Shrewd.
Yeah, sure we saw the probable end of Chad Johnson's career - with his arrest for domestic abuse and then his release from the team. 34-year-old wide receivers with legal issues and problems catching the ball don't get a lot of looks from teams, but maybe someone will get nailed with a bunch of injuries and need Johnson. Unlikely though.
This week's episode was more exciting than the season premiere. We saw guys getting in brawls during practice, we saw guys getting their asses chewed for not being good enough, and we were shown Johnson getting sat down by head coach Joe Philbin and told he was no longer needed on the organization. The pain in Johnson's face showed he knows he might not get another NFL job.
The rookie hazing was entertaining. Tannehill sang 'Lean on Me' in front of the team during a meeting, and plenty of dudes had their hair, um, restyled by some veterans with clippers. One poor lineman even had his eyebrows shaved clean off, after someone cut his hair in the shape of a dong. Props to him for laughing it off. Tannehill's hair wasn't touched, proving one thing: you can make a QB drafted in the first round sing, but you don't touch his hair.
Veteran QB David Garrard's knee injury happened as he just turned to watch his kid play in the pool, and he had to have surgery that will keep him out for another few weeks. That left Matt Moore to start the first preseason game. Tannehill looked better in the game, and many are thinking he should start right away. I agree.
The Dolphins didn't look too great overall, a 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay. Roberto Wallace, a third year receiver, looked like he got the message that he needs to step it up, as did hybrid tight end/fullback Charles Clay.
And we got another look at undrafted rookie tight end Les Brown's smokeshow of a wife. The more looks we get at the WAGs in the next few episodes, the better.
