‘Hansel and Gretel’ Gets Serious and Other Fairy Tales that Should Go to the Dark Side

I don't know if you've noticed, but Hollywood is starting to make movies based on fairy tales now. I'd say it all began in 2010 when Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland was released to much success. It was followed by other adaptations of childhood classics all done in dark and adult-oriented tones, such as Red Riding Hood (this one sucked balls) and Snow White and the Huntsman (which starred Kristen Stewart the adulteress).

You can expect even more fairy tale adaptations in the next couple of years, with Jack the Giant Killer, Oz: The Great and Powerful, and of course, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Who would've thought that Hansel and Gretel would grow up to be witch hunters? I certainly didn't. It looks like filmmakers are using a pretty simple formula to pump out more money-making movies without much effort: fairy tale + insert killer or hunter storyline + cast A-list stars = brand-spanking 'new' movie.

It was recently revealed that Jeremy Renner has been cast as the titular Hansel. It's interesting to see how he'll transition from being Hawkman in The Avengers and Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy to playing an all-grown-up Hansel.

I'm sure this is just the start of a new movie-making trend in Hollywood, so why don't we all just jump on the bandwagon and supply the producers with a list of fairy-tale movie adaptations that they really should consider doing down the line?
