Of all the people who know what's going to happen in Halo 4, including the developers, folks at Microsoft and business types who wouldn't know the Covenant from a circus troupe, we like to rely on the voice actors for information. They've actually performed the dialog that's going to move us forward emotionally and justify all of the bullets we're going to be firing. These folks know the plot points because they're are the engineers of the story-telling architecture.
We had a chance to talk with Jen Taylor, the actor who's given voice to Cortana in the Halo series, and by triangulating 343 Industries' story suggestions, Taylor's coy hints, an off-the-cuff remark or two and our own wild imaginations we've been able to come up with an educated guess at what will be a significant plot point in Halo 4.
Cortana is going to split her "personality" and Master Chief is going to somehow fight one of them.
There, it's been said.
There are two standout quotes from the video interview we have for you today that help with this theory. Taylor says we'll have to look at Cortana "in a very very different way the next time we see her." This could mean anything from Cortana being a different color to Cortana turning into a mini-giraffe wearing cowboy boots (note to self: interpret dreams before writing these stories from now on), but we're still sorting out the pieces.
Next, the quick shot, near the end of our piece here, showing a very angry Cortana screaming at somebody off screen about never letting them leave "this planet." When you take Taylor's explanation that Cortana and Master Chief's relationship is becoming very emotional, it's a short hop to guess that only the Chief could make Cortana that mad. He has to be the one who can't leave the planet.
Finally, and this is the bit that holds the whole theory together, we asked Taylor about using her Cortana voice to give what's called a "drop" (Hi, I'm so-and-so and you're watching Egotastic Hot Coffee, you see right at the beginning) and she asked if we wanted "both" of her characters to do drops for us. Record MF'ing scratch. In the Halo franchise, Jen Taylor plays Cortana, and up until this point, nobody else. Although we said we wanted both characters to indeed give us drops, common sense crept in or the Microsoft chip in her head activated itself and we were left with a quote from the wonderful Jen Taylor only and nothing from any hidden characters. Drat.
Watch the video interview above, sound off on Facebook and on Twitter using #cortanarocks and we'll get this conversation going because there's definitely something there. And don't act like you wouldn't want to see some form of Cortana vs Master Chief because that would re-energize the franchise in a way that the Covenant or Prometheans would not.
