Britain celebrated its first Klingon wedding last week. Jossie Sockertopp and Sonnie Gustavsson left their native Sweden for a destination wedding, not on Kronos, but in England. In full bumpy head makeup and Klingon garb they were married in a ceremony also conducted in the made up language. It would be easy to make fun of these two for their goofy nuptial choice, But I'm more interested in what it says about England. On the one hand, that this is their first Klingon wedding puts them waaaayyyy behind us. After all, we've translated the Bible, Macbeth, Hamlet into Klingon and created the Klingon dictionary. Americans have been getting married for decades wearing the hedgehog heads. On the other hand, England recognizes Jediism as a religion. So, it either shows a prejudice for Star Wars fans or it demonstrates their opening up to equality among different forms of made up species. Mind you, there is no gay marriage in England. But fake alien race civil unions are cool. Maybe if gay couples applied for marriage licenses as Wookies? How could the clerk tell what their gender they are?
