Regular old reality can be a bit, well... boring after a while. You walk the same old streets, to the same old offices and see the same old people, but what if there could be more to reality? What if you could get yourself some real-life Terminator vision?
Well, it looks like Google is getting ready to make your hum-drum existence a little bit less boring. They're getting ready to sell pairs of augmented reality glasses to the hip and nerdy. These spy-like specs will be able to wirelessly feed you data about a variety of different things in your every day world. It could give you a lot of information about the world around you.
Sadly Google is not releasing any images, or a listing of complete specs for this new device, but we do know a little bit about what is going to be found inside these super specs. The system will be set up with GPS tracking technology, a set of motor sensors, a camera, as well as audio inputs and outputs. The glasses are augmented reality because a combination of the camera and the GPS will spot you location and give you information about the things you are seeing. Users will get custom information on locations in view, such as restaurant reviews and may even be able to get detailed information on products they are browsing in the shops they visit.
Let's juts hope it's never used by the evil forces of advertising. Imagine the horrors of having a non-stop stream of ad and "deals" piped directly into your eyes as you walk down the street. Its a little too big brother for me. The system will also have some serious privacy implications when you think about it. After all, you would literally be giving constant access to your location, and everything you are seeing, to the folks at Google and any app makers that create software for your newest mobile device.
Right now experts are estimating that the glasses will cost somewhere between $200 and $600 per pair of glasses. Its not really a helpful range though. You're just going to have to wait it out and see how they fall in the specs and price range once Google sees fit to release more information, or at least some teaser information, about the final version of the glasses. For now all you can do is wait and daydream about all of your new data. Just remember that once you know something, you can't unknown it so wear them wisely. Of course, Apple has a prototype in the works right now too, so they might beat Google to the punch.
