Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One hits theaters beginning Wednesday night, and if you're unfamiliar with the source material, this new featurette will explain the broad strokes better than I could in three minutes. I would also recommend this video for anyone that's still not sure about Spielberg as the director. He's done an awful lot to keep his filmography out of the film, so anyone worried about that sort of catastrophe should breathe a little easier.
Honestly, it would be virtually impossible for Spielberg to turn this movie into a love letter to himself. People wouldn't abide such a decision, and he knows it. I don't think that was ever really the issue with Spielberg, for me anyway. My problem is that it's very difficult for a director to make a film that's influenced by movies he and his buddies made twenty to forty years ago. He doesn't have the same perspective of that work that the rest of us do. Edgar Wright, or even J.J. Abrams, would have been great choices for this material, but here we are.
Unfortunately, I have to wait until Saturday to see it as they're keeping Pacific Rim in the IMAX theater until then. I think if you're gonna see this flick at all, you should see it in 3D and IMAX, if possible, because Spielberg will go out of his way to make this immersive. Fingers crossed the movie is half as fun as the book.
