Netflix doesn't have the best track record for high concept, big budget sci-fi lately, what with Bright, The Cloverfield Paradox, and Mute all being poorly received. On the horror end of things, however, they've been doing a bit better thanks to their lower budgeted and better quality flicks like Hush, Gerald's Game, and Little Evil.
Let's hope that the upcoming Tau takes its cues from the latter rather than the former, though it seems to have been gifted a rather lavish budget. In some vague, non-descript future, It Follows star Maika Monroe finds herself kidnapped and offered a choice: test an advanced AI program called Tau (voiced by Gary Oldman) or die. That's not necessarily a choice, so of course she decides to play the game.
It's an interesting premise. Kinda like Panic Room meets Ex Machina combined with a dash of Moon. Plus Gary Oldman is a pretty safe bet, though he's not immune from starring in garbage. The film marks the feature directorial debut of storyboard artist Federico D'Alessandro as well as the feature writing debut of Noga Landau.
I don't see how they can manage to make this better than a Black Mirror short, however. What do you do with the extra thirty minutes of exploration that a feature affords you? That's the mark of a good story and a good director. Let's hope this has both. Tau debuts on Netflix next Friday, June 29.
