Nikolas Cruz - the teen behind the school shooting in Parkland, FL leading to the deaths of at least seventeen students and teachers - was lucky enough to live in a community where the police weren't necessarily the smartest people in the entire world, according to new consensus. So, most communities. JK. I love when they take over a traffic light and bring the city to a screeching halt. Anyway new documents show that the police were called on Cruz thirty-nine-times over a seven-year period for disruptive and disturbing behavior, and a new video released by TMZ shows Cruz wearing a Make America Great Again hat while practicing shooting in his backyard. You don't necessarily need to be an Olympic marksman with a rifle and a hallway full of students, but it's nice to see kids getting outside. Other of Cruz's prior offenses include vandalism and torturing animals. According to a classmate Cruz "cornered a squirrel and was trying to throw rocks at it and kill it."

People naturally need someone to blame when they are affected by tragedy, and in addition to pointing fingers at Trump and white trash supremacists and guns and stage ten inbreeding, people are going in on the police, saying that evidence like this video and the thirty-nine filed complaints point to negligence on their part. Being a policeman really is the most thankless job in the world - hell I even like them and I still hate them - and they can really only be celebrated when they themselves get shot down. Maybe they should have taken the time to further investigate Cruz, or maybe they live in Florida and have twelve Aileen Wuornoses on their hands on any given day. Or maybe the people at the FBI should have done their jobs. Who knows. (Although they did just release a whoopsies statement.)

The sad, undeniable truth that all of us finger pointers must face is that at the end of the day, if someone really wants to shoot up a school or blow up a plane, he can. (Yes I blamed the FBI yesterday and three sentences prior to this one, and you know what, they can still suck it.)  If you consider the inmates screening your bags at the airport to be your safety net you are sorely mistaken. If you're expecting someone who got all Cs in high school to protect you and your children from a psychopathic teen, good fucking luck. There are no guarantees, no matter how much we tell ourselves that safety is just a finger point away. You might get shot and killed as part of a hopeful gang member's initiation before you even get home from work today. Or stabbed in the spine by a disgruntled coworker and remain in a wheelchair for the rest of your horrible life. Or get tortured and raped in an alley by a homeless person on bath salts. And that's what makes life so fun.
