One of the biggest question marks still remaining on the summer movie calendar has to be Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Besson's films are really hit or miss, though when he hits, he's been known to crush it. Advanced word on the film has been mostly positive and based solely on the stuff we've seen from the film to date, I imagine there's a chance this could be one of the better films to come out this summer.
Below you'll find five new clips from the film, most of them running just under a minute long, but fear not as the film has roughly 130 additional minutes with which to dazzle and amaze us jaded and cynical moviegoers. Perhaps the biggest issue hanging over the film are its two leads, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne. While DeHaan has done a few things of note like Chronicle and Kill Your Darlings, most of the movies he's appeared in have been total garbage. Delevingne, on the other hand, has done nothing but trash and really has yet to prove herself as a viable leading actress. Resting a giant special effects film like this on their shoulders is perhaps the riskiest thing about the movie.
Either way, we'll all find out in a little over two weeks if this film is any good. I know that I'll be there with my popcorn and soda and plenty of sugary snacks to keep the rush going. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21.
