I have many fond memories of reading "The Gunslinger" series by Stephen King in high school when it was a mere trilogy. Now it's grown and grown into a phenomenon, and while I haven't kept up with the series, this first trailer for the film adaptation The Dark Tower brought all of those good memories flooding back.
Let's start with the note perfect casting of Idris Elba as Roland Deschain. That clip of him rapidly reloading his gun just past the two minute mark might be one of the coolest things I've seen in a trailer. Then there's Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg—aka The Man in Black—whistling his s's and speaking in that laconic Texas drawl that'll send shivers right down your spine. He's kind of a perfect bad guy, it's surprising more people don't take advantage of that when casting him.
While there's no indication as to which books they're specifically adapting for this, but it looks like a bad ass summer popcorn movie, which makes its August 4 release date make so much more sense in context. Either way, sign me up for this one. There's plenty of sequel potential and since everything's gonna be a franchise from now on, might as well gravitate toward the ones that look cool.
