There is true horror afoot in the legend of the internet boogeyman known as Slender Man, but will any of it translate into the new film Slender Man? It's pretty doubtful. By now, you know the story of the Wisconsin teenagers who stabbed their classmate in order to appease the fictional entity, but this film clearly isn't interested in any real life horror.
French director Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) and writer David Birke (the Oscar-nominated Elle) have scrapped all of that real life nonsense in favor of jump scares and creepy makeup. It's honestly a little disappointing to see something with the potential to really chill an audience to the bone go for the cheap and easy jump scares that are a hallmark of the modern horror film.
Honestly, if you're interested in the really terrifying story behind Slender Man, check out the documentary Beware the Slenderman, as that gets into the real nitty gritty stuff of what makes this story so terrifying. If not, just bide your time and wait for this flick to hit theaters on May 18. I'm sure it'll make a killing at the box office, nestled as it is right between Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
