For years, the burning question amongst all little people actors had to have been, "Who's gonna land the role of Hervé Villechaize if and when they do a biopic?" It was like the Mount Everest for little people actors, so I guess that makes it like Signal Hill, maybe.
Anyway, Peter Dinklage may not look like Hervé and he may be stealing roles from Latino little people actors, but he's definitely the most qualified actor for the job. Dude's gonna sell the shit out of this role.
Dinklage is portraying Villechaize in the HBO movie My Dinner with Hervé, a darkly comic take on the night in 1993 that writer/director Sacha Gervasi spent with the diminutive star just prior to his suicide. As Dinklage told the New York Times Magazine in regard to the film, "After he killed himself, Sacha realized Hervé’s interview was a suicide note.” Pretty heavy stuff, but it's got a lot of potential considering its subject.
If this trailer is any indication, Dinklage hits it out of the park, nailing the actor's unique voice and cadence. It feels like it'll walk that line between cringeworthy and decently entertaining. My Dinner with Hervé, co-starring Jamie Dornan, debuts on HBO on October 20.
