In case you doubted that Captain Marvel was actually set in the 90s, I say behold these new pics of Brie Larson in costume holding an honest to goodness road map! I know that's not the big appeal of these pics, I just wanted to mention it because it'll be important later. So yeah, this is probably why we don't see a lot of superhero movies set in broad daylight, because the costumes look ridiculous without several layers of color desaturation.
Not that this looks totally out of place with the overall aesthetic of the MCU, but it does reek a bit of 90s Schumacher comic book cartoonish-ness. Are they indeed making a meta commentary on the overall garish state of comic book movies in the 90s? I didn't think they would, but it seems they really are. There's nothing about this costume that says, "Take me seriously as a comic book superhero." To me, it's screaming out, "Man, the 90s, amirite? (Ironic chuckle)."
So yeah, mark my words, Captain Marvel will end with her getting a more badass, streamlined version of the costume that looks more at home in the MCU and less at home in 1997's Spawn. It wouldn't surprise me to discover this is an Infinity War stinger scene either, because it appears to be played for laughs. I don't know, whatever this is looks like a joke and maybe it's Marvel just taking a piss, but I doubt it. Time will tell.
