Remember those movie trailers that used to walk you through the basics of the plot rather than just give you a mishmash of cool looking scenes? Well, the final Ready Player One trailer harkens back to those halcyon days. This new trailer is also littered with critics quotes, as the film made its world premiere at SXSW last weekend, and the response out of the festival was overwhelmingly positive. You can't blame them for trying to assuage the fears of any fans of the book.
And that's basically what this new trailer does. It serves to let people know that whatever reservations they had—or continue to have—about Steven Spielberg doing the book justice are totally unfounded. It's as if they're saying, don't worry folks, the good Spielberg showed up to make this movie. You know, the guy who made Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park and E.T. That Spielberg. Not the one who made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Lost World, or A.I.
I guess that's my biggest reservation about the project on the whole, so I'm glad to know that Warner Brothers is finally acknowledging that with this latest trailer. They've got an amazing property on their hands here and they want you to know that a legend made it, and it's great. Fingers crossed they're not playing us for a bunch of saps. We'll find out in 12 days.
