The ending to The Sopranos is regarded as one of the most controversial scenes in television history. The distinct lack of closure left viewers agonising in torture over the fate of their favourite characters. Was Tony killed? Were A.J. and Carmela taken down with him? Why did it take Meadow so long to park her damn car!?

And it might be a relief for some people to know that it wasn't just the audience who were bamboozled by David Chase's ending. James Gandolfini, the man who played Tony Soprano, has revealed that even he didn't fully comprehend the shows sudden finish, telling Vanity Fair, 'When I first saw the ending, I said, 'What the f?!k.' I mean after all I went through, all this death, and then it's over like that?'

However unlike many fans of the show he soon came around to Chase's brave conclusion adding, 'After I had a day to sleep, I just sat there and said, 'That's perfect'.' Hopefully, Gandolfini's wise words will finally convince the naysayers that the finale does have its merits.

But after five years I doubt that it will have any effect at all.
