Ethan Hawke Implying All Superhero Movies Inherently Mediocre

Ethan Hawke has recently outed himself as a cinema purist and the final authority when it comes to judging the quality of superhero movies. Hawke the hater is slamming superhero films because no one from Marvel Studios ever asked him to put on a pair of tights. He’s letting everyone know that superhero movies can never be great as if The Dark Knight doesn’t exist. Heath Ledger died for the sins of superhero movies before him, it seems slightly sacrilegious to discredit the sequel in the Batman trilogy as anything less than a masterpiece. Just because Christian Bale ran around New York City in costume and cape doesn’t mean the film didn’t touch the hearts of millions.

“They tell us ‘Logan’ is a great movie,” Hawke said in an interview with The Film Stage,  “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands.”

“It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman,” he added, referring to the legendary filmmakers Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman.

I’d agree that most superhero flicks are quick cash-grabs guaranteed to at least make their money back even if the profits are minor. And sure, there may be an average of six Marvel movies every year, but to say none of them have the potential to be great is dismissive. Ruby Rose munching rug in a Batwoman outfit sounds Oscar worthy to me. A scene like that alone should nab her the award for best lesbian superhero of all time.
