I would have loved the opportunity to rearrange Emma Stone’s insides but it looks like her corset beat me to it. Body positivity was not big in the 1700s like how it is today. So that meant Emma had to slip into a corset for her role in her new movie The Favourite. I honestly thought we were past accurate representations in film and I was expecting Rebel Wilson to get a crack at squeezing into a dress meant for a coke bottle. I hope Hollywood isn’t voluptuous-shaming the “healthy” sized actresses that are available.
The Oscar winner, 29, stopped by the Graham Norton Show where she revealed the horror of having to shoot in a corset in order to fit the time period. The movie takes place in the early 1700s while Queen Anne battled with France, forcing Stone and her fellow leading ladies Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz into way-too-tight clothing.
“Women existed like that for such a long time, which gives you a lot of sympathy for that time period and what they were going through,” Stone says. “For the first month, I couldn’t breathe.”
The actress adds that the only thing that would relieve her discomfort was the smell of menthol. “I would smell menthol and it would make me think I was in a wide-open space and could breathe for a moment in time,” she says. “After a month, all my organs shifted — it was gross and if you don’t have to, don’t do it!”
I’m probably going to see this movie because the only other movie that might be interesting in the month of November involves a flamboyant Rami Malek finding fame and AIDS all within a span of a little over two hours. Plus it’s Emma. Someone her complexion is never encourage to be out too long during daylight hours but that ginger fantasy did it for us. The least I can do is purchase a ticket to pay my respects.
