If your short term memory hasn’t been impaired by years of heavy drinking, like mine has, you’ll remember the Batman: Arkham VR trailer we took an ogle at last week. Whenever Arkham is mentioned, natch, you have to praise Rocksteady’s series. Mostly for its great work in the field of reminding us that licensed games don’t have to be a barrel of bollocks automatically (everyone still hates you, Superman 64).
Batman, as we know, has a much better reputation in video games than most superheroes. He is kind of a badass, after all; that business with George Clooney’s bat-nipples aside. But what of his alter ego?
Bruce Wayne: The Game has never really been a thing. It makes sense why, of course, with Batman being the much more fun and ass-kicky of the two. No-one wants to play as a fancy-ass rich guy, cruising around cocktail parties and showing the ambassador of Zimbabwe your world famous collection of 17th century pottery. Nuts to that.
All of that said, in certain genres, you’d need a little more Bruce. At E3, Telltale Games showcased the batventure they’re working on, and it’s Wayne’s time to shine.
‘Telltale games are story-driven sagas with a lot of dialogue choices,’ Kotaku explains, ‘but Batman is not a chatty guy. Because of that, a lot of what you appear to do when controlling Batman in this game is tap buttons and flick analog sticks to orchestrate fights.’
Batman The Telltale Series is going to have the usual batarangs, fists and criminal’s limbs flying around, but that’s not the focus here. We’re talking about a title with a completely different pacing, a whole new direction. Telltale fans will want to get in on this when the episodic game starts arriving in slices this summer.
Here’s GameSpot’s intro to the new title, fresh from the show.
