If you were drawing names of actors out of a hat that could somehow contain every working actor, you'd be hard pressed to come up with a more disparate trio than Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, and T.J. Miller, but that's the triumvirate at the heart of the new disaster flick Underwater. They play a group of scientists whose underwater laboratory turns into a death trap following an earthquake.
At least the movie understands what it's selling, which is January thrills at the box office, a time when no one really expects much from a movie like this other than to be dumb fun that strokes your intelligence rather than insults it. Part of me wants nothing to do with any movie starring T.J. Miller in 2020, but the pull of both Stewart and Cassel is strong. It also helps to remember that this movie is being released at the start of the worst three weeks of theatrical releases in the calendar year next to three weeks leading up to Labor Day.
Anywho, this reeks of being a write-off before the end of the fiscal year, so don't go in expecting much more than that. Did I mention that Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, and Vincent Cassel are all playing learned doctors? This is where your expectation level needs to be when Underwater opens on January 10.
