Variety reports that Warren Beatty is suing for the rights to make a sequel to his 1990 comic book detective movie Dick Tracy. The colourful film, which starred Beatty, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Madonna, was visually inspired, and if you were ten years old, like I was, a great movie.

If you weren't a kid at the time, though, you probably thought the movie sucked. Which, in retrospect, I think it did. And it begs the question: do we really need a sequel to an all but forgotten movie, starring an over-the-hill actor? Do we even want one? (via SHH)

Beatty, who starred in and directed the 1990 film "Dick Tracy," based on the classic comicstrip, is seeking a ruling that he still owns film and other rights, plus $30 million in damages. The damage figure presumably is based on the profit Beatty expects to see from a sequel. Domestic box office for the film in 1990 was $100 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of that year.

Update: According to ComicBookMovie, it looks like the people Warren Beaty is suing actually want to make Dick Tracy into a TV series. I think, if they really need to make more DIck Tracy, a movie is the way to go, not a series. I can here the cancellation news already. (via The Movie Blog)
