Three years ago, Adam McKay shocked us all when he went from frequent Will Ferrell collaborator to Oscar winner for his brilliantly bleak and funny film The Big Short. Now he's doubling down on that blend of truth, comedy, and wigs galore with Vice, a look at Dick Cheney's tenure as Vice President of the United States.
Cheney here is played by Christian Bale, doing one of his signature whole body transformations to play the portly former VP. He seems to have nailed it, at least as much as one can tell from a two minute trailer. His wife Lynne is played by Amy Adams, marking a reunion of the bewigged co-stars of American Hustle. McKay's buddy and frequent star Steve Carell is also on hand as Donald Rumsfeld.
The star of these proceedings, however, is Sam Rockwell, absolutely nailing his George W. Bush impression behind a glorious fake nose. It was a little surprising he didn't turn to Ferrell for this role, but I couldn't be happier to see Rockwell doing this, especially considering he more or less turned Zaphod Beeblebrox into W back in 2005's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Vice opens on Christmas Day, featuring competition from Aquaman, Mary Poppins Returns, Bumblebee, and McKay's Step Brothers stars reuniting for Holmes & Watson.
