Daisy Ridley, who admirably helped save Star Wars in The Force Awakens, might be brought on to revive another dying franchise. In the early 2000s Angelina Jolie starred in two pretty bad movies based on the Lara Croft Tomb Raider video games. I saw both of them in the theater because I was a big fan of the games. They made me angry they were so bad. So, because it's Hollywood, the powers that be want to reboot the series and Ridley is in serious talks to take over the role now that Angelina Jolie is a little long in the tooth. Look, I like Daisy Ridley. She was great in Star Wars and she seems like a nice person. But I don't know about her playing Lara Croft. From a purely aesthetic point of view she is all wrong. Lara has huge boobs and a shapely butt. Daisy, although cute, has neither. That's why from a casting perspective Angelina Jolie was actually well cast.
The other problem is an existential one about movies being made based on video games. We've all played games and thought, "Wow, this is really cinematic and would make a great movie." But it rarely if ever works. Part of the problem is that a game is meant to be driven by the player and a lot of what happens depends on that. The other thing is that the plots rarely are strong enough to sustain 90 minutes of screen time though they are fine as a framework for the game. We'll see if this rumor is true, but I'm wary.
