Let's be honest here folks. Boxing just isn't quite as interesting as it used to be. We just don't have the names that we used to have, i.e. Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis--the list could go on and on. On second thought, let me preface that comment with we actually do have a pair of tremendous and incredibly popular fighters. Between the two of them they have 97 wins, 64 of them coming by knockout.
They just won't fight each other. That is, until now--possibly.
Floyd Mayweather has been adamant that he would not split the take with Manny Pacquiao even though the Philippines-born boxer is just as much of a draw as he is. That combined with Mayweather's insistence that the two fighters be subjected to random blood testing as late as the night of the fight.
It appears now that Pacquaio is willing to come to a compromise. Rather than split the take 50-50 he's offered to take a 55-45 split (with him getting the 45) in order to make what will likely be the most lucrative fight in history (if it ever actually happens) happen.
However, it is hard to say whether or not it will even with Mayweather getting his way on the split and blood testing. Mayweather has made his opinion on Pacquiao pretty clear in the past. He thinks that the Pac-man has previously taken steroids.
Now that Pacquiao has agreed to the blood testing--his major bone of contention--and agreed to take a lesser amount than Mayweather there is no real excuse for the fight not to happen. That is, unless someone really is a little scared...
There is one thing besides Mayweather that could hold up the fight. Pacquiao has to beat his next opponent, Juan Manuel Marquez. In the three previous fights, Pacquiao won two and came away with a draw in the other. However, there are many that think Pacquiao should have lost at least two of those fights.
Boxing needs to figure out someway to make this fight happen. To have two figures who are as popular as they are not fight is like saying the winners of the AFC and NFC Championship should never play in the Super Bowl. It does not make any sense for the two not to meet and actually takes away from their respective legacies by not facing off on the biggest stage in the sport.
You have your blood testing now Floyd so what do you say? You already own the record for largest payday. Want to break it?
