Round about 2012, I changed my tune on Channing Tatum. Thanks to the 1-2 punch of 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike, I chucked whatever blind hatred I had toward him and began embracing him for what he is: this generation's Patrick Swayze. That first G.I. Joe movie is awful, though, and I refuse to let my apology to him include anything to do with that first G.I. Joe movie.
Tatum's next role is as Agent Tequila in Kingsman: The Golden Circle, due in theaters on Friday, and he looks right at home in a cowboy hat with a drawl and a mouth full of dip. Watching Tatum get acquainted with Taron Egerton's Eggsy and Mark Strong's Merlin is an awful lot of fun, and I look forward to catching more of their banter in theaters this weekend.
My only reservation with this flick is the two hour and twenty one minute running time. The first movie worked because it didn't overstay its welcome. I sincerely hope that this sequel doesn't squander the best thing about the original. I suppose we'll all find out this weekend when Kingsman: The Golden Circle hits movie theaters in North America.
