I'm a pretty open minded guy. I have traveled all over the world and have experienced lots of different cultures. One tries not to judge other people's customs by the framework of my modern American sensibilities. But it's when I come up to stuff like Icelandic whale testicle beer that my tolerance grows thin. During the Icelandic winter month of Thorii, which is I guess now, The Stedji brewery is selling a very limited run of Hvalur 2 beer. The secret ingredient is pieces of fin whale testes which is cured and smoked according to old Icelandic tradition. The brewery states that,
"We want to create a true Thorri atmosphere, and therefore we decided to use smoked testicles from fin whales for flavouring the beer."
The only problem is that fin whales are endangered and the brewery is being criticized for harvesting the whale testes from these beasts of the deep. Clearly whale testicle beer must have been popular in days of yor if the whales have become endangered. It almost makes me curious enough to try it...almost.
