Billy Hamilton has been making a name for himself this season in the minor leagues as a nearly unstoppable base stealer. He cemented that status last night, breaking the record for the most steals in a minor league season after notching his 146th swipe. He added number 147 later in the game for good measure.
Hamilton began the season playing single A ball in Bakersfield, and then was promoted to the double A Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Hamilton and the Wahoos were playing the Montgomery Biscuits in Florida last night when the 21-year-old broke the record. Vince Coleman previously held the record, stealing 145 back in 1983.
It took Hamilton, who's been caught stealing 33 times this season, 120 games to get his 147 steals. Coleman set the mark in 113 games.
