Bill Parcells to the New Orleans Saints?

The Saints could have done it this year. They could have put an end to the dreaded "Super Bowl Host" curse. Thanks to the idiocy of some of the players that was encouraged/allowed by the coaching staff (resulting in the head coach getting suspended) the chances of that are not so good anymore.

Or are they?

As it turns out even though he may not be able to coach the team this season, head coach Sean Payton may be taking care of his boys anyway. Prior to the league dropping the hammer on him for the whole bounty mess, Payton reached out to a guy that knows a thing or two about taking teams to the Super Bowl—Bill Parcells.

Now there has yet to be any sign that Parcells has accepted/rejected or been offered the spot, but if he was interested the team would be beyond foolish not to hire him. He's been to the Big Show a few times and won it twice. There are few people that can evaluate talent like him, and even fewer that can get quality play out of guys without talent (look what he did for the Dallas Cowboys from 2003-06).

If offered, there is reason to believe that the Big Tuna will turn the Saints down. When he walked away from the game the last time he talked about being burnt out and not wanting to do it anymore. However, if there was ever a situation where he would want to do it this would be it.

He has the chance to do something that no other coach has done—play in a Super Bowl that his city is hosting. Many have tried, but few have come even close. The Colts were considered favorites to do so until Manning's neck issues. Dallas was thought to be a contender two years earlier, but their egos got in the way there (they forgot you have to do more than just show up).

This is a great idea for Parcells. He doesn't really have to do much at all. The team is in place; all he has to do is keep the program moving forward. No rebuilding necessary. No heavy decisions. Just maintain the status quo at the least.

Plus, he knows it's only for one year. The team will not look to fire him unless he starts skipping games or tries to put Jonathan Vilma at quarterback and Drew Brees at defensive end. The man can't go wrong here.

So what do you say Bill?

(If Parcells does coach the Saints, its probably a good thing that Jeremy Shockey isn't on the roster anymore.)
