Whether or not you liked La La Land or Whiplash, you can't deny director Damien Chazelle's talent for storytelling and his ability to craft grand spectacles. For his next film, First Man, Chazelle re-teams with La La Land star Baby Goose for this biopic about Neil Armstrong and his journey to become the first man on the moon.
It's easy to see why Chazelle would pick Gosling for this role as Armstrong was a stoic genius whose prevailing character trait was remaining cool as a cucumber under pressure. These are the kinds of roles Baby Goose gets hard for, the kind where he can clench his jaw and flash his puppy dog eyes and instantly earn the sympathies of everyone in the audience.
Thanks to Chazelle and Gosling's previous Oscar pedigree, not to mention the subject matter, I would expect this to be a strong awards contender, and October is home to some great space flicks that earned awards in year's past like Gravity and The Martian. I don't know what it is about space and October, but the American public is obviously down for that sort of thing.
First Man flies into theaters on October 12, and will most assuredly hang around through awards season.
