The earliest known jersey to be game-worn by Babe Ruth sold at auction over the weekend for a staggering $4.4 million. The price is the highest ever for a piece of sports memorabilia.
The winning bid was from Lelands.com , a memorabilia dealer. Lelands plans on selling the jersey privately, rather than auction it off again. The jersey, which is believed to have been worn by Ruth in 1920, had been displayed at the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum in Baltimore.
A Babe Ruth game worn hat also sold at the auction, for $537,278. Former Yankees pitcher David Wells sold the hat, which he bought for around $30,000 back in the mid-nineties. Not a bad return on his investment.
