Director Edgar Wright is an absolute master of pop culture. His films have a rhythm all their own, one that relies heavily on nods to the past while always driving the medium of film forward. While it was heartbreaking that we were cheated out of his version of Ant-Man, that project's failure to launch spawned his latest film, Baby Driver.
What, on the surface at least, seems like a fairly ordinary "group of criminals vs. cops" flick promises to be anything but thanks to Wright's fast-paced and uniquely individual style. One of the pull quotes featured in this new trailer says that Wright "uses music the way the rest of us use air," and a quick look at the various musical credits listed at the end of the trailer is one of the more eclectic mixes I've ever seen...
Seriously, who else but Edgar Wright would put Simon & Garfunkel, Barry White, Young MC, and Danger Mouse all on the same soundtrack? Needless to say this is one of the most anticipated films of the summer for film geeks, and my greatest hope is that general audiences will get on board for this one. Edgar Wright deserves to be one of the premiere directors in Hollywood, and this might just be his best shot at crossover appeal. We'll all find out for sure when Baby Driver opens on June 28.
