Mattel's latest Wicked dolls have made a splash—but not exactly the way they planned! The Ariana Grande-inspired Glinda doll, based on her upcoming role in Wicked, accidentally ended up promoting an adult website thanks to some curious packaging choices.
Ariana stars as Glinda, the sweet and sparkly "Good Witch" in the highly anticipated Wicked movie adaptation, with Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Mattel’s doll captures Glinda’s charm, but let’s just say the doll took an unexpected detour before reaching its target audience.
Fans got a good laugh, and we can’t help but wonder if this version of Glinda has some “grown-up” spells up her sleeve.
In one of the funniest blunders in movie marketing history, Mattel's Wicked doll packaging featured a link to "wicked.com," which—unfortunately for the toy giant, happens to be an adult entertainment site.
So, rather than sending fans of the Broadway-inspired movie adaptation to Oz, it directed them somewhere far more R-rated!
It’s a hilarious mix-up that has fans raising eyebrows, especially since the Glinda doll, modeled after Ariana Grande’s character, was meant for the younger audience. Safe to say, this detour wasn’t quite what Glinda had in mind!
In a statement shared with Variety Sunday regarding the error, Mattel said:
“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel ‘Wicked’ collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”
