If you’re underage and from another country you most likely fit the prerequisites for the adoption fetish that Angelina Jolie suffers from. Clearly an entire movie about Cambodian problems is a form of favoritism for her son Maddox but I almost believe that Jolie genuinely cares about what’s happening in the world outside of California. But then I remember Hollywood is all about equal opportunity extortion. Unfortunately for her openly being one of the least xenophobic celebrities in Hollywood still didn’t stop her from being snubbed at the Oscars. Her movie First They Killed My Father failed to make the foreign film list.

Angelina Jolie's critically praised Cambodian film, First They Killed My Father, will not contend for an Oscar in 2018.

Jolie's Netflix passion project — which she co-wrote, produced and directed — had been selected as the Cambodian entry in the best foreign film category for the 90th Academy Awards on March 4.

But the film was not on the shortlist of nine candidates for five nominations that were announced Thursday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Ninety-two films had originally been considered in the foreign film category.

The film doesn’t look like it offered much other than the stereotypical highlighting of third-world poor people problems. If you’re harvesting rice instead of learning how to read there’s a good chance you may run into people who will take advantage of you. Or if you’re lucky a celebrity will adopt you. Meeting somewhere in the middle of that led to the making of this movie. What would definitely deserve an Oscar is the performance Jolie will have to give hundreds of Cambodian children explaining that the world did not care enough to consider them contenders.
