Do you remember a time when people got excited for movies based on video games? Me neither, but if such a time existed, it might be now. The more I see of this upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider series on the big screen, the more my intrigue grows. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I'm excited now, but seeing Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft unleashing her longbow skills... I might be approaching excitement.
Empire Magazine brings us this newest still from the film being directed by the hilariously named Roar Uthaug. The slim article does give us a few tantalizing details, such as how the film will be a prequel to any existing Lara Croft adventures, finding Vikander's version of the character working as a courier in London who sets out to track down her father and finds herself involved in all manner of intrigue. Vikander also provides an appropriately enigmatic quote about the character, almost justifying the fact that she's an Oscar winning actress starring in a video game movie...
“We asked, ‘What are the famous traits of this person?’” recalls Vikander in the new issue. “‘How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?’”
Sure, all of that. Just so long as you swing on the rope and shoot the bow and arrow, we'll be all good. Tomb Raider hits theaters in March.
