After 2017's Get Out mined the racial tension still haunting our country, many filmmakers have become emboldened to make bigger and less subtle films operating in that same vein. Next spring, we'll get Antebellum, a new horror film that brings slavery into the 21st century... or something. It's virtually impossible to tell just what's going on from this first trailer alone, but things aren't looking so great for non-whites.
All IMDb is willing to let on is this brief synopsis...
Successful author Veronica finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it's too late.
Musician turned actress Janelle Monae, who was excellent in both Moonlight and Hidden Figures, stars as Veronica, and that's virtually all we know right now. There's obviously a Black Mirror-esque alternate reality at play here, but who knows what the film has to say and how it's going to say it?
The film comes to us from writing and directing team Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, who started their careers directing documentaries and music videos for artists like Jay Z, and are making their feature directorial debut with this flick. While we don't know what exactly to expect, I'm sure there's going to be more than a few twists and turns in this thing.
Antebellum opens on April 24, 2020.
