2014's Godzilla was an interesting experiment in making a kaiju film that stayed almost exclusively with the perspective of people on the ground while giant monsters fight around them. It certainly wasn't everyone's cup of tea, and a major gripe with the film is that the title creature only had around ten minutes of screen time in a two hour movie.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters is clearly looking to course correct a couple of things, namely the lack of big monsters going at it in major cities. There's obviously a human element to the film and I'm sure we'll spend plenty of time getting to hang out with these human characters, but that's not really what anyone goes to a Godzilla movie to see.
Hopefully this is closer in spirit to Kong: Skull Island, which managed the balance quite nicely, never sacrificing giant monster battles for useless human subplots. Since they're crafting a shared cinematic universe among all these creatures leading, inevitably, to Godzilla vs. King Kong, it'd be nice if they established some sort of consistent tone between the various films, and I think they're better off moving more toward Kong than back to Godzilla.
Either way, Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be fun to see in IMAX, which you can do starting May 31.
