The last decade has seen Richard Linklater go from the stoner comedy guy to one of the most respected filmmakers of his generation. He's got an amazing range and versatility, and that he directed Jack Black to his two career best performances in two wildly different films—School of Rock and Bernie—speaks to both of those traits.

Thanks to films like the Before Trilogy and Boyhood, he's also become a critical and awards darling, which is the vein he's operating in once again for the upcoming Where'd You Go, Bernadette, starring the always amazing Cate Blanchett. Based on a book of the same name, this is another in a recent spate of female-centric thrillers for grown-ups like Gone Girl, A Simple Favor, The Girl on the Train, and most recently Widows.

Like those films, this one has a female writer as well in Holly Gent, who co-wrote with her husband Vince Palmo and Linklater. I think that makes a difference in making a thriller compelling in more ways than one. Female writer, male director has proven a great combination many times in the past. I hope this follows suit.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette opens in theaters in North America, most likely in limited release, on March 22, 2019.
