2018's MCU offerings came to an end this weekend with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, and one of the most exciting sequences in the film is an early battle between Wasp and a bunch of goons in a restaurant kitchen. The film's director Peyton Reed filmed a "Notes on a Scene" video for Vanity Fair, where he breaks down the scene's construction and all of the technical work that went into making it look seamless.
I have to be honest, after all the world ending shenanigans of the last few Marvel movies, it was refreshing to see a relatively low stakes adventure that still tied into the overall MCU storyline. The first Ant-Man rekindled my love for Marvel movies after the disappointing bombast of Age of Ultron, and Ant-Man and the Wasp helped reground the series after the intergalactic antics of Infinity War.
I also have to admit that I didn't think much of Peyton Reed as a director prior to him joining the MCU. His films were mostly high concept comedies like Yes Man, Down with Love, and The Break-Up, none of which were what I would call director's showcases. However, he has proven himself an adept director, able to balance comedy and action better than many of us thought or expected.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is now playing in theaters everywhere!
