When word first hit of a follow-up to Denis Villeneuve's 2015 film Sicario, the details were scant at best. Now that we're approaching its release date, we have a trailer that lays out the story, as well as a new title for the film, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Pick a language, would ya title? Jeez. This time around, Benicio and Brolin are going head to head in a botched government operation designed to bring rival drug cartels to war with one another.
I must admit that if they're going to do a sequel to the original, they seem to have found a decent way of doing so. Check out the film's official logline, via ComingSoon...
In Sicario: Day of the Soldado, the drug war on the US-Mexico border has escalated as the cartels have begun trafficking terrorists across the US border. To fight the war, federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) reteams with the mercurial Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro) to start a war between dueling cartels by kidnapping Isabela Reyes (Isabela Moner of Transformers: The Last Knight), the teenage daughter of infamous kingpin Carlos Reyes. When the mission is exposed, and Graver orders Alejandro to terminate Isabela, the killer’s cold façade cracks.
The great thing about this is that it's another acting exercise for Brolin and Benicio. To pit their testosterone-heavy warriors against one another is a great idea, and anytime a film can add Catherine Keener and Matthew Modine to its cast, I'm down. I must admit to being sad that Villeneuve didn't return to direct the film, but he's left it in the capable hands of Italian director Stefano Sollima. Plus Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water, Wind River) once again wrote the screenplay, so that can't be understated.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado opens June 29, 2018 in North America.
