Duncan Jones—aka Duncan Bowie, aka Zowie Bowie—is an enormously talented genre filmmaker whose last two films have been compromised detours into big budget hell. His 2009 debut, Moon, however is one of the greatest flicks of the new millennium. It's also a super-easy film for them to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer since he never takes corporeal form in the film. Anyways, Jones' latest film is a Netflix original sci-fi flick titled Mute.
In his continuing quest to prove he's more than just a hunk who has a career because of nepotism, Alexander Skarsgård stars as Leo, a bartender suffering with the titular affliction in Berlin fifty years in the future. There he meets Paul Rudd sporting a Wilford Brimley-esque mustache and Justin Theroux wearing Javier Bardem's wig from Skyfall. Something about a missing girl as well.
It seems kinda like Dark City meets a Paul Rudd movie, but I have faith that a guy like Duncan Jones has got more in store for us than whatever it is this trailer is showing off. I do worry that this and Altered Carbon might give the common folk futuristic sci-fi overload. Either way, Mute starts streaming on Netflix beginning February 9.
