Opening weekend of Star Wars: The Last Jedi has come and gone and it was every bit as profitable as I'm sure Lucasfilm and Disney were expecting. In addition to racking up $220 million in North America—good enough for the second best opening weekend of all-time behind The Force Awakens—the ninth Star Wars film made an additional $230 million overseas, for a grand total of $450 million in three and a half days.
According to Deadline, this is good enough for the fifth best global weekend box office take of all-time. The film launched in 54 markets besides North America this weekend with the UK leading the pack with $36.7 million. Strangely it doesn't open in China, a notorious cash cow for big budget American movies, until the first week in January, but expect it to rake in plenty of bank from the Middle Kingdom when it does.
Of course this is only the beginning and the film is set to play for weeks with no major competition. While I think there's no doubt The Last Jedi will make a ton of money, its divisiveness amongst fans—whom the studio relies on heavily for repeat business—might see it drop off a lot sooner than TFA. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out over the next few weeks.
