Whenever the great Stephen Colbert says anything, you have to stop and ask yourself if it's the real Stephen Colbert talking or the fictionalized Stephen Colbert talking. If, for example, you are watching him on his own show, The Colbert Report, you can be certain that it's the fictionalized Colbert. However, if you are watching him on somebody else's show, it's tricky.
This was certainly true last night when he stopped by The Late Show to have a chat with late night rival David Letterman. On the one hand, he certainly seemed serious when he said he was in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. On the other hand, that seems kind of crazy. And he was dressed up and talking like some Charles Dickens character.
However, it turns out that it was the real Stephen Colbert talking, and he is in Desolation. Or at least, he—and his family, apparently—have a cameo during a scene in the human village of Laketown.
So keep an eye out for Stephen Colbert when you go see The Hobbit this Friday. He's in there somewhere.
