The Continuing Saga Of Pussy Riot

Pussy Riot continues to cause widespread protests in Russia. I previously reported on the arrest and trial of the terrible all-girl punk band on the charges of "hooliganism". The girls hijacked a service in Moscow's Christ the Saviour cathedral and sang a horrible song called Punk Prayer protesting the Russian Orthodox Church's support of Vladimir Putin. In the months since their arrest, there have been huge demonstrations in the streets over Putin's draconian response. Even decrepit reanimated corpse Madonna has joined the fight. They could go to jail for 3 years! Pretty intense punishment for performing a crappy song. But all it really proves is that Putin has no sense of irony.

I'd never say this to Putin's face, (that guy could choke a horse), but he's strongly lacking in a sense of irony. If he'd had his government simply slap these girls on the wrist, the only thing people would have remembered was that they had the word pussy in their name. Instead, he proved them right. It's caused a genuine crisis in confidence in the Russian government. People are beginning to feel like the days of Soviet control are back. Think about the fact that groups like Amnesty International, who used to work to free Nelson Mandela and bring down dictatorships, now spends its time and resources on Pussy Riot. In the weird and wacky world we live in, a ridiculous band of pissed off liberal arts chicks that wear ski masks and sing stupid songs can possibly bring down a president.
