Perhaps the infamous Rodney King said it best when he asked the question," Can't we all just get along?"
Getting along seems to be something that many fans are having a hard time doing at baseball parks around the country these days. Apparently no one learned a lesson from the beating that Brian Stow took last year in Los Angeles after a Dodgers game (sad people; stop the violence already).
Disruptions happen at ball games. There's the drunk guy that insists that everyone in your section does the wave. For some parks running onto the field has become a pastime (I'm talking about you Camden Yards). We all hate the middle reliever that makes 13 pick off attempts during the same batter.
The point is that crap happens; violence is no way to deal with it not to mention it totally takes away from the game.
One of the latest incidents occurred at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Apparently PNC Park is a non-smoking park (not a secret and pretty clear to fans). When security personnel asked a woman smoking in her seat to leave her boyfriend attacked the guard.
To make matters worse, her dad joined in on the beat down. In the process the security guard lost a finger. Yep; you read that right—a finger was lost.
This is just plain stupid. Cigarettes are not that cheap in some states, but when compared to bail money on assault charges they are. What in the heck were those people thinking? Obviously, they were not (or were full of something that helped make them stupid).
Police had to get a little physical with the women in order to get her in the police car since she was fighting so hard. Her lawyer will no doubt try to use that as a mitigating factor, but come on—a dude lost a finger because of your stupid tobacco habit!
Luckily, the finger was able to be reattached, but in light of this event and another one that happened at PNC Park last year I don't see security guards going easy on anyone anytime soon.
(Last year's incident. Caution--it's kinda crazy.)
