JJ Abrams Says That Disney Is Planning 10 More “Star Wars” Films

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a huge hit for Disney and generally well received by audiences. After nearly 20 years of suffering from the memory of the prequels, we finally began to heal and come together in our shared humanity and the awesomeness of Star Wars. But in news that makes me very wary, JJ Abrams says that Disney has 10 more Star Wars movies in the works. There are Episodes VIII and IX, of course, as well as Rogue One coming out this year. Then there are the stand alone Han Solo and (possible) Boba Fett films. That's 6. There are four more that we don't know about already in development. That means that we will probably be Star Warsing until 2030. Abrams said,

"There are some really cool things being discussed. It is very exciting to see how it is being put together...So many characters' back-stories can now be brought to life. When these ideas came from George Lucas 40 years ago, technology was lagging behind."

There is no way, NO WAY that they can sustain quality for ten more films. While I hope they will, chances are that there will be diminishing returns once we get to the 15th Star Wars film or whatever. It's like with the James Bond films, some are awesome, some are terrible, and many of them are mediocre. How many backstories do we really care about? The childhood of Luke as a moisture farmer on Tatooine? Jabba the Hutt when he was just a baby slug? Jar Jar Binks in old age regretting having created the Empire? Who cares?
