‘Gears of War 4’ Horde Mode: Just as Goretastic, Now With Classes

Survival mode is one of gaming’s oldest staples. In the days of primitive-ass arcade games, Asteroids and Pac-Man and such, this was all there was to games. Your only mission, objective and goal: Kill things. Don’t get killed.

Today, survival mode is tacked on to all kinds of games, usually as an unlockable. Generally, you’ve got just one life, your balls nailed to the wall, endless waves of slavering enemies to take out, and a new high score to achieve. I love this stuff, and spend much more time here than I do in main campaigns.

Case in point: Gears of War’s Horde mode. I pretty well forgot Gears 2 and 3 had missions to play through, I was so engrossed by the hordetastic. With each entry, it’s become more varied and tactical, with defences to build and all that sort of deal. With the upcoming Gears of War 4, the mode’s being expanded and changed in some pretty major ways.

Classes, Ego-gents. Classes. If you’ve seen any of the bitching about Quake Champions and how the series is changing to an Overwatch-style ‘hero shooter,’ you’ll know what a big deal this is. But yep, now your horde character is one of five classes: Sniper, engineer, soldier, scout and heavy.

The spangly new trailer below shows a little of how each will play. If you want some mass-Locust-eviscerating action with some relaxing sweary hip hop in the background this Friday afternoon, this is the only place to be. Check it out.
