If you've never seen Joel Schumacher's 1990 flick Flatliners, you might be surprised to learn that it's basically an anti-bullying morality tale dressed up as a supernatural thriller. Deciding that now is the time to rehash that plot, Sony has released the first trailer for their remake that looks to amp up the supernatural elements to new heights.
Flatliners is being ushered to the screen by Danish director Niels Arden Oplev—who directed the first film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo—from a script by the guy who wrote the third and fourth Species movies. Similar to the original, the cast is populated with beautiful people like Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Kiersey Clemons, and Diego Luna. From what I can glean from this trailer, Page seems to be taking on the Kiefer Sutherland role, which is interesting considering that imdb has Sutherland listed as one of the cast members. Very interesting.
Whether you're a fan of the original or not, this seems to be one of the more interesting remakes on the horizon. There's no guarantee it'll be any good, but it's got a better than average shot at it. We'll find out for sure when Flatliners opens on September 29.
