It's going to suck watching this second season of The Punisher, which drops tonight at midnight on Netflix, because of the bittersweet nature of the season. While Netflix has yet to make anything official, with the cancellation of Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, it seems inevitable that The Punisher will get his pink slip from the streaming service soon after tonight's premiere.
And it's a damn shame, too, because they finally found an actor who can convincingly portray the dual nature of Frank Castle. Jon Bernthal was terrific on the second season of Daredevil, and has continued to be a strong presence in the Marvel universe. It just sucks that once Disney fully re-absorbs all of its Marvel properties, they're probably going to put ol' Frankie on back burner as he doesn't really fit with their family friendly aesthetic.
Don't get me wrong, maybe Disney has some grand plan in place to create more adult-oriented programming for their Disney+ streaming platform, as lord knows they have enough Marvel series in development over there. It just doesn't seem to make sense with the cinematic universe they've established. Only time will tell.
The Punisher's second—and likely final—season drops on Netflix in about 15 hours.
