Since we first got wind of a potential New Mutants movie, it's always seemed like a dicey proposition. The off-shoot of the X-Men has been around since the early 80s and has even been featured on-screen before on the animated X-Men: Evolution series in the early aughts, but a feature film seemed like a bridge too far, especially considering that most comic book movies look and feel the same these days.
Thankfully it appears as if writer/director Josh Boone has managed to do something new and original within the comic book movie world. The first trailer for next April's flick looks and feels like a horror movie. We get very little to indicate that this is a comic book movie and a lot to indicate that it's a haunted house/escape from the asylum type movie.
I sincerely hope that Fox gives Boone a long enough leash to make something new, original, and different within the mutant world. From what we're seeing in this trailer, this isn't run of the mill stuff. This looks like a real risk, and I hope they let him run with it. We'll all find out the next time the 13th falls on a Friday, which will be April 2018.
