If there's one thing that all of the various advertisements for this month's Aquaman have been devoid of, it's Willem Dafoe. You see, you can't promise someone like me Willem Dafoe in a film and then do everything in your power to keep him hidden. Maybe they're playing it close to the vest because Dafoe's the third lead, but more likely, it's because he's not in the movie much, so there's hardly anything to show.
They did this recently with another fan favorite, Jeff Goldblum, whose entire cameo was spoiled in the very first trailer. Perhaps they don't want to blow their wad in a similar way and they're keeping Dafoe under wraps. Either way, there's now a clip featuring the former Green Goblin sporting a ridiculous Toshiro Mifune wig and playing more or less the same character he played in The Florida Project.
The whole enterprise is ridiculous, but if James Wan pulls this off as well, he'll be a genre chameleon at last and no longer that guy who made the first Saw movie. Or maybe this whole thing will be a giant write-off for DC and WB and we can go back to a time when Aquaman existed as a movie only on Entourage.
Aquaman swims into theaters two weeks from Friday, on December 21.
